This document provides a brief overview of fibre-sensing technologies and their possibilities in both the structural monitoring of NREN infrastructure and in Earth observation and monitoring. Studying these new technologies by identifying potential NREN use cases, along with wider applications in the national and GÉANT pan-European infrastructures, offers a useful source of data to NRENs, and to the multiple and heterogeneous research communities connected by NRENs whose research stands to benefit. This document is aimed at NRENs but is comprehensible enough that other audiences, such as research communities and industries, will find it useful.

This document maps MARnet’s Operations and Business Support System (OSS/BSS) to the TM Forum’s Open Digital Architecture (ODA) and analyses the mapping to provide a standardised view of the components and implementations of orchestration, automation and virtualisation within the NREN. It highlights MARnet's strategic alignment with contemporary digital architecture standards and emphasises the critical need for automation within MARnet's operations to meet the growing demands of education and research activities. The analysis also identifies opportunities for further enhancement of MARnet's intelligence management capabilities through advanced technologies like machine learning and AI-capable tools, positioning MARnet to proactively adapt to emerging technological trends.

Generative AI is reshaping the landscape of network management, enabling systems that analyse and create configurations, reason on fault resolutions and traffic patterns, and proactively respond to emerging threats. This white paper provides a state-of-the-art review of the use of generative AI through the scope of the FCAPS framework. The aim is to present and highlight current capabilities and research directions, as well as identify the challenges of integrating these technologies into real-world networks.
